What a better sign to display your product than a street sign standing in the way of patrons walking down the street on their way to get somewhere! This particular Borden’s Ice Cream sign would certainly catch a potential patrons attention with its bold design, colors, and sheer dimensions while blocking the sidewalk in front of an old ice cream or malt like shop. In the 1940’s through the 1960’s sidewalk street signs used to advertise not only ice cream but breads, store goods like soda, beer, and other non-essential products were oftentimes the products used for these pieces. What a better way to garner sales for an item that may not be needed but was certainly desired at the time the potential customer approaches the sign. Today street signs have come back into fashion a bit, albeit with stores advertising their products and the prices generally on many of them, unlike just a simple product as was done in years gone by like this porcelain sign demonstrates.
The Borden’s Ice Cream brand was sold throughout the United States for many years, with their signature cow image associated with the brand. Founded in 1857 in Connecticut, the Borden brand has all but disappeared from the landscape today after going bankrupt in 2001.
