This is a rare one gallon stoneware advertising jug from the Sussmann Bros Meat and Grocery Company in E. Saint Louis, Illinois. Circa 1915. The Sussmann Brothers were well known in their business dealings and this jug is one of 4 known to exist with the local stoneware collector groups. The Sussmann’s were Jewish grocers in early day East Saint Louis, IL This would have most likely held Whiskey in it, but possible vinegar since he was a wholesaler. There are 45 of the Sussmann Meat and Grocer jugs known to exist from East Saint Louis, IL. East Saint Louis is directly across the river from St. Louis, MO.
