This particular curved glass corner sign was designed to hang outside of saloons or taverns in the 1900 era whereby beer from the Charles Schibi Brewery was being sold to thirsty patrons inside! Oftentimes because of the curved design and the wooden backed frame, these signs were put up outside the establishments in a pair, one adorning the left side of the entrance, and the other adorning the right side of the establishment. Originally found in wood and then tin, around 1890 or so the sign makers were starting to produce glass signs similar to this one. While not marked by the maker of the sign, this most likely came from either Zeiser Signs from St Charles, John B Schmidt out of Saint Louis, or the P. Paause sign company in Chicago, Illinois. All of these companies produced the Reverse on Glass signs similar to this style with etched gold leaf lettering involved.
The Chas. Schibi brewery was in competition with the Moerschel family Spring Brewery in St. Charles for quite a few years. Both companies produced glass corner signs, both produced handsome oval serving trays, and other items like etched glasses, etc. Today, while difficult to find often, these pieces from the breweries do show up from time to time. If you have something, I am a rabid collector of items from Saint Charles, Missouri also. So please send me a note if you have an item!
