Gund Brewery's Committee on Refreshments Self Framed Tin Sign. Peerless Beer, La Crosse, WI. Circa. 1910

I have always loved this sign! What a great image of three men carrying the Peerless brand of beer to an event, calling themselves the “Refreshment Committee”! This pre-prohibition era sign is truly an entertaining piece of artwork with a funny flair to it. Who could not appreciate someone bringing a keg and bottles of brew to their fun event? The men are coming prepared, a block of ice to keep the beer cool, a picnic basket with food I can only assume in another mans arms, and the case of Peerless beer in the third mans hands. A complete package for the refreshment committee!

The Gund brewery was founded by John Gund in 1880 in LaCrosse, WI. However before he started his own brewery John worked in breweries in Iowa and other towns in Wisconsin. His brewery eventually succumbed to the start of prohibition like all the other breweries in the U.S., however, the Peerless brand was restarted again after prohibition ended and remained a well known seller for years. Peerless was also brewed in Oklahoma too, but I do not believe this was the same recipe. Time will tell if this is incorrect or not to this author.
